Jon F. Peters, MD, MS, FAAFP

Dr. Peters was born into a military family in Spokane, Washington.  After his father retired from the Air Force, the family settled in the Phoenix area of Arizona.  He began his college career as a pre-med and Biology major at the University of Arizona, but finished his undergraduate studies in Tempe, receiving his Bachelor’s in Zoology from Arizona State University. In 1980 he graduated from Northern Arizona University with a Master’s in Biology, his primary focus being Ecological Entomology. Thereafter, Dr. Peters accepted a tenure tract faculty position at Laredo Community College in Texas where he taught and helped conduct research on ground squirrels. Returning to his medical interests, Dr. Peters entered medical school in 1984 and was awarded his medical degree from the University of Texas at Dallas Southwestern Medical School four years later. After completing a family medicine residency at Arizona’s Scottsdale Memorial Hospital, he returned to the Northwest where he has been a physician at Family Medical Group Northeast since 1992.

While in residency Dr. Peters was awarded the Resident Teacher Award and the Burroughs-Wellcome Family Practice Resident Scholar Award. He was also nominated for Arizona’s Outstanding Third Year Family Practice Resident Award. Dr. Peters has continued his teaching interests by serving as an Affiliate Associate Professor of Family Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University, where he was honored with a Mentorship Award by the Department of Family Medicine. Furthermore, in 2007 he was awarded the Degree of Fellow from the American Academy of Family Physicians, which recognizes exceptional service to family medicine.

Dr. Peters is enthusiastic about the changes in health care and how providers approach and interact with their patients. From his perspective, health care is moving away from providing mostly point of service care towards focusing on overall health care optimization which emphasizes prevention and sustaining a healthy lifestyle. Since so many diseases, such as most high cholesterol levels and the subsequent high risk of heart attacks and strokes can be traced back to the American epidemic of obesity, it will be important to find effective methods that lower obesity in the many patients with this issue. Other health issues that are also linked to obesity include high blood pressure problems, sleep apnea, many cases of acid reflux, and type 2 diabetes, and Dr. Peters is dedicated to working with patients to reduce their risk of experiencing these problems.

When he is not in the office, Dr. Peters stays active and spends as much time as possible outdoors. During the winter he enjoys downhill skiing, reading, working on several web sites he operates, and watching college football (Go Ducks). He also serves on the advisory board for The Center for Inquiry, Portland where he actively promotes rational thought, skepticism and secular humanism. In the summer, Dr. Peters hikes as much as possible and pursues his passion for nature photography. He also enjoys recreational road biking and has completed the Summit to Surf and the Peach of a Century Ride. His longest ride was a two day, 170 mile bike trip from Portland to Eugene. Dr. Peters enjoys traveling, and hopes to continue to make trips to Europe and other areas of the world. Giving back to the community is important to him, and currently he is a volunteer physician at one of Portland’s Community Clinics. Relationships are very important to him, and he enjoys spending time and supporting family and friends, especially his four daughters.

Dr. Peters is often out of the office on Fridays.
